India : Textile daily wagers shine with hearts of gold
July 20, 2006

An amount of a little over Rs600,000 was donated by daily wagers which was collected by Ahmedabad Textile Labour Association (ATLA) on behalf of the workers in November, 2005 for the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for the rehabilitation of tsunami-affected people.

Association, which works for the betterment of the textile workers, had solicited workers to voluntarily donate whatever they could for the relief fund.

In a group effort, the unemployed and employed workers, having no savings to confer, parted Rs10-15 from their meager daily earnings, while some offered a day’s earnings, realizing their own pathetic condition, helping them to sympathize with those on grounds of humanity.

Amongst these textile workers who were previously working in the closed mills, now manage to earn as low a paltry sum of Rs. 65 per day taking up odd jobs even in automobile, wooden and steel factories.

More than 50,000 workers of the textile industry had contributed Rs6,64,000 to the fund, stated President of ATLA although they had never anticipated such an overwhelming response.

Humanity still exists is proven by these modest earners of a large and hectic city.
