Textile industry leaders visit TTU's Nonwovens Laboratory

During the week of September 20-24, the Nonwovens & Advanced Materials Laboratory at TIEHH, Texas Tech University, USA hosted a number of industry leaders from India, Pakistan, Australia and USA to discuss research collaborations and showcase the nonwovens and advanced materials laboratory capabilities. Dr. Seshadri Ramkumar, Associate Professor and Manager of the nonwovens laboratory hosted the international visitors.
Dr. Seshadri Ramkumar and Mr. V. Srinivas, Joint Secretary of Textiles, India discussed the initiation of a proposal to develop the skill set of Indian textile industry to cater to the needs of the emerging technical textiles sector. The deliberations clearly pointed out the need for practical knowledge in the converting sector of the technical textiles industry. Soon efforts will be made to initiate such activities in India in collaboration with Dr. Ramkumar of Texas Tech University.
Mr. Joshi, Textile Commissioner of India was given a tour of the nonwovens laboratory at Texas Tech University. The nonwovens laboratory with over 2 million dollar investment has state-of-the-art H1 technology contoured needle zone needle punching machine, through air thermal bonder and coating mangle. The laboratory also has a good textile testing facility.
This laboratory has new instruments such as BET surface area analyzer, TSI particulate filtration tester and contact angle measuring instrument. Dr. Ramkumar and Mr. A. B. Joshi discussed the importance of setting up new centers of excellence in technical textiles in India.
During the discussions with the Textile Commissioner, Dr. Ramkumar insisted the need to develop process oriented centers of research. These can involve, one stop R & D center for nonwovens, composites. One positive outcome is that the realization that India can lead technical textiles research by uniquely developing a center focusing on chemical formulations and research focusing on technical textiles.
Dr. Ramkumar also discussed with Mr. Dhiren Sheth, President and Mr. Nayan Mirani, Vice President of the Cotton Association of India about the possibility of providing a workshop on the value-added opportunities in cotton.
The leadership of the Cotton Association of India expressed keen interest in this idea and has invited Dr. Ramkumar to visit the Association during his next visit to have detailed discussions. Texas Tech University will also be exploring collaborations with the nonwovens laboratory at the United States Department of Agriculture's research facility in New Orleans and Deakin University in Geelong, Australia.
