Maccaferri, a leading manufacturer of geotextiles and a renowned leader in gabion retaining structures, has celebrated the enduring success of gabion. In 1893 the company tested the first industrial application of the product that has now become a part of the history of civil engineering, the company said on its website.

Gabions are wire mesh baskets or mattresses filled with stone, are permeable, strong, flexible, and often able to tolerate differential settlement. These are used to stabilize slopes, armor pipe outlet structures or construct retaining walls. Wires are interwoven to form a cubic mesh unit and then filled simply with only stone.

The company thanked the invention of the gabion, which in the upcoming decades, has turned a small firm into a globally recognised brand within modern civil engineering. The versatility of the system has spread throughout the world, to extend beyond the boundaries of civil and geotechnical engineering. Architects and landscape designers have, in recent years, glimpsed within gabions exceptional opportunities to combine ecology and aesthetics, ease of assembly, environmental sustainability, cost-effectiveness and reliability.

Maccaferri's gabions geotextiles are used in a variety of applications and solutions within a broad range of key sectors such as infrastructure, environmental protection, hydraulic and coastal engineering, flood and emergency and many others. (NA)
