Tengri, British fashion brand and noble yarn specialist, has allied with bed maker, Savoir Beds, to from a bespoke edition of one of the world’s most coveted beds. Made with Tengri’s yak fibres from the noble creatures of the mountainous Khangai region in Mongolia, the Savoir No1 Khangai will offer signature sleep experience of one of the world’s best handcrafted sleep systems, combined with ultimate in sustainable luxury.

The Savoir No1 Khangai demonstrates the ‘apogee of bespoke bed making’, since its establishment by Savoir in 2010. The Savoir No1 Khangai will surpass all levels of comfort available at present, using sustainable noble yarns by Tengri. Eight kilograms of noble yak fibres, hand-combed from 80 homegrown semi-wild yaks from the Khangai will fill the legendary topper and mattress system. Khangai yak, has hair with unique textures and colourings and are found only in animals native to this region. The fibre obtained from them is as soft as cashmere, warmer than merino wool and naturally odour and water resistant. With only 100 grams of fibre attained from each yak per year, the Savoir No1 Khangai is a precious investment.

Taking the art of fine bed-making to the levels of comfort and luxury, the new bed is inspired by designs and construction methods from the halcyon days of Edwardian glamour and luxury. Handcrafted from the Savoir Beds’ London workshop, the Savoir No1 Khangai provides ultimate in deep, restorative sleep, based on a tier of three elements. The boxspring offers extra-long springs, linked by time-honoured hand method of star-lashing. The frame is made of hardwood beech, crafted with handmade dovetail joints and that gives Makassar ebony trim, suede upholstery and a flexible, hand-tied cane edge. The mattress offers hand-tied pocket springs, masses of loose, curled horse-tail hair is encased by lavish layers of Tengri noble fibres. The topper includes 4kg of Tengri noble fibres for sheer decadence.

The Savoir No1 Khangai mattress will be topped with a panel of high-tech stretch cotton fabric and filled with extra-deep, high-turn pocket springs along with double layers of Khangai noble yak fibres. The topper incorporates outer layers of noble yak fibres that encases two layers of premium horse tail curled around a lambswool core. The top and bottom panels of the case are made from the cotton stretch fabric used on the No1 mattress for the comfort of the luxury noble fibres.

Nancy Johnston, founder of Tengri, comments, “The ‘Savoir No1 ‘Khangai’ will demonstrate a new wave of sustainable luxury, offering precious and sustainably sourced materials, celebrating the values of true luxury in heritage craftsmanship and providing classic longevity, a true investment piece. Sustainability and luxury shouldn’t be mutually exclusive and our exciting new collaboration proves this, achieving the epitome of aspirational luxury.”

With award-winning environmental credentials, Tengri champions sustainable manufacturing with usage of noble yak fibres. They are hand-combed from an indigenous breed of yak having less impact on biodiversity compared to non-indigenous and domesticated animal species, such as cashmere goats, introduced and bred for their fibres.

“We constantly strive to offer our customers the most exclusive and luxurious beds – this often means looking closely at the provenance of the carefully-selected materials we choose to use. With this in mind, we are hugely excited about our collaboration with Tengri, who create their yarns using natural materials carefully sourced each year from some of the most rural and remote corners of the world,” says Alistair Hughes, managing director of Savoir Beds.
