American & Efird Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. (A&E), the Brandix Group's manufacturer of world class sewing thread has donated a consignment of essential garments to villagers in Illupadichchene
in the Eastern Province in a corporate social responsibility initiative. The donation valued at Rs. 3 million included ladies tops, t-shirts, trousers, camis and lingerie sourced from within the Brandix Group.
The village of Illupadichchene is located 20 kilometres off the Polonnaruwa - Batticoloa main road and was once a strong base camp of the LTTE. “Clothes were an urgent need for these villagers who were severely affected by the war. Nearly 5,000 villagers benefited from our project and of them approximately 1,000 were women who had lost their husbands in the conflict,” said Janaka Gamage, Chief Executive Officer of A&E Lanka. He said more donations of this nature would be considered in the future, as part of A&E's commitment to the community.
The project was initiated by the STF's A.S.P. Sylvester Wjesignhe, Sector Commander of Karadiyanaru - Batticaloa Sector with the guidance of S.P.W. Wimalasena, Zone Commander - Batticaloa and DIG R.W.M.C. Ranawana, DIG Operations - Eastern Range. The Company also hopes to support a project conducted by the Special Task Force to build houses for the villagers in Unnachchi located 30 kilometers from Illupadichchenei, Mr. Gamage further stated. These villagers had lost their homes during the three decades long war.
