Tanzania : 21st Century Textiles plans massive expansion
June 4, 2007

Morogoro-based 21st Century Textiles Ltd, subsidiary of Mohammed Enterprises Company Ltd (METL), had sketched out a massive expansion plan. Talking to Fibre2fashion, a senior official from METL, requesting anonymity, gave complete details of the proposed expansion.

Source confirmed, “Total investment is estimated to be around US $85.00 million in development of cotton farms, ginning, spinning, weaving, processing and printing. The spinning capacity would be 45 metric tons per day and the weaving capacity would be around 200,000 meters per day. The blending, mercerizing, dyeing and printing capacities will match the weaving capacity.”

As for measures to boost exports, the official said, “Company already exports cotton yarns and grey cloth to Europe, US, South Africa and other countries. Our products are in high demand for their quality. The additional quantities after expansion will have a ready market.”

Regarding enhancing the quality of dyes and yarns, the source explained, “The group also has another subsidiary, 21st Century Holdings Ltd., which manufactures and exports natural and dyed sisal yarns which are used in carpets and other products. This also has ready markets."
