Around 21,331 workers across 129 Bangladeshi industrial units, mostly from the readymade garments (RMG) sector, have lost their jobs after Eid-ul-Fitr due to measures taken by factory owners to tackle the COVID-19 outbreak. Nearly 11,000 were retrenched in the last two weeks, Industrial police data show. Labour leaders, however, say that number is much higher.
Out of the 21,331 workers, 19,409 reportedly are garment and textile industry workers, 16,853 are from 86 factories of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), 2,298 from 16 factories listed with the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and 258 from four mills under the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), according to Bangla media reports.Around 21,331 workers across 129 Bangladeshi industrial units, mostly from the readymade garments sector, have lost their jobs after Eid-ul-Fitr due to measures taken by factory owners to tackle the COVID-19 outbreak. There are hundreds of industrial units out of the jurisdiction of industrial police and the laid-off workers of the units are not included in the data.
The worst sufferers are the workers with less than a year of experience as they are not entitled for any compensation as per the law.
