Kisan Board Pakistan urges govt to frame cotton policy

Noting that domestic cotton farmers are facing exploitation due to lack of a cotton policy, Kisan Board Pakistan (KBP) central president Sardar Zafar Hussein Khan has called on the Federal Government to at once introduce a cotton policy.

In a statement, Mr. Khan noted that there has been a sharp rise in prices of agricultural inputs including fertilizer and petroleum products, which necessitates a rise in cotton prices.

He urged the Government to upwardly revise the ‘phutti’ (raw cotton) prices to Pk Rs. 4,000 per maund (37.324 kg), to save cotton growers from exploitation.

Noting that apart from meeting the domestic requirement, cotton also helps the country to earn valuable foreign exchange through exports, he sought that measures should be taken to boost cotton cultivation acreage, and to prohibit establishment of sugar mills in cotton growing areas.

Mr. Khan also urged the Government to impose a duty on cotton imports to boost the income of domestic cotton farmers.
