Africa seeks Vietnamese cooperation in raw cotton

A delegation representing the raw cotton industry in East and South Africa is on a business visit to Vietnam, one of the biggest Asian apparel exporters to explore opportunities to export more cotton to the country.
Between Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda around 450,000 tons of cotton is grown per annum.
Since consumption of cotton is limited in the region, most of it is exported, which makes it a good source to import cotton.
In 2013, Vietnam imported around 581,000 tons of raw cotton amounting to US $1.17 billion, a steep rise of 39.1 per cent from 2012. This cotton came mainly from India, US, Brazil, Australia, Pakistan and Ivory Coast.
In the first seven months of the current year, Vietnam has already imported 458,000 tonnes, up 34.9 percent from the same period of last year.
Currently, Vietnam is importing a very small portion of its raw cotton from Africa and most of what is imported, is from deals made with traders in countries like France and Switzerland, which made them more costly.
Since African cotton was imported through third parties, feedback on quality concerns took a lot of time to be conveyed and rectified.
However, there exist great opportunities to multiply the cotton trade and boost cooperation between Vietnam and African countries.
