Uganda adopts new Cotton Grade Standards

New Cotton Grade Standards have now been adopted as the official ICA Bremen standards for Uganda.

Patrick Ilukat of the Ugandan Cotton Development Board made the trip to the UK to renew the standards, the International Cotton Association (ICA) said.

The new grades adopted for roller ginned cotton are UCON, UCOB, UCOP, UCOA, and UCOM, and for saw ginned are UCOSA I and UCOSA II.

Cotton Grade Standards serve as a benchmark in international trading and can be used by cotton merchants for the purpose of cotton classification and by ICA Bremen arbitrators to resolve quality disputes in the case of a quality arbitration.

The Bremen, Germany-based ICA Bremen, the global centre for cotton testing and research, holds the largest collection of worldwide Cotton Grade Standards that represent the current crops of cotton grown in each country.

Uganda was a leading exporter of quality cotton until a few years ago, but its exports have dropped in recent years. In 2013, the country’s earnings from cotton exports fell by 58.6 percent to US$ 31.42 million, compared to earnings of $76 million in the previous year.

One of the reasons for lower production capacity as well as poor quality of Ugandan cotton is that the crop is mainly grown in areas that are not easily accessible.

Only five percent of the cotton grown in Uganda is utilized domestically, and the rest of it is exported, mainly in the raw form.
