Arewa Cotton, Nigeria’s leading cotton farming and ginning firm, has joined hands with Government of Nigeria in distributing free cotton seeds to farmers. In order to increase the production and for the development of cotton farming in Nigeria, the Government and Arewa Cotton have taken this step as per the Government’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA), BUSINESSDAY reported. The ATA revolves around the empowerment of farmers for improved farming capacity.

Speaking at a workshop on ‘Cotton Production and Cotton Value Chain Development in the Southwest’, organized for cotton farmers in the Southwest, ahead of the cotton farming season 2014, Adebayo Olayemi, Southwest manager, Arewa Cotton, said Arewa Cotton has started the free distribution of cotton seeds to thousands of farmers in all the South West states, including Edo, to support the Government’s Growth Enhancement Scheme (GES). The GES was designed with the purpose of providing affordable agricultural inputs like fertilizers and hybrid seeds to farmers, to help them raise their yields to match global standards.

Mr. Oleyami said that along with supporting the Government of Nigeria in providing farming inputs like seeds, they have also stepped out to increase the production of cotton and development of its value chain.

He added that apart from the increase in cotton production, which is aimed to revive the declining cotton textile mills in Nigeria, the development of cotton value chain would create job opportunities in the textile sector.

He expressed hope that the involvement of the Government under its ATA programme, managed by Arewa Cotton, would yield useful results.

Minister of agriculture and rural development, Akinwumni Adesina said the Government of Nigeria has increased its involvement through the GES, exclusively for cotton farmers, to help achieve the goals of the ATA.

Meanwhile, the Ogun state government has approved 10,000 hectares of land for cotton farming under the supervision of Arewa Cotton to support restoring the culture of commercial farming through the establishment of plantations and to ensure that the farmers have enough land for cotton farming.
