The cotton industry in the United States expects a 3 per cent rise in sales in Indonesia this year, according to Cotton Council International (CCI), the export promotion arm of the National Cotton Council, a US industry association promoting the brand Cotton USA. Indonesia is Cotton USA's fourth-largest market after China, Turkey and Mexico.

The sales target would be achieved by directly approaching consumers instead of only contacting businesses, CCI Indonesian representative Andy Do told a press conference in Jakarta recently.

Sales in Indonesia range between $300 million and $600 million a year. It imports cotton mostly from the US, Australia and Brazil.

With increase in Indonesia’s population, an emerging middle-class prefers better-quality garments and cotton is known for offering quality, Andy said.

To capture a bigger share of the Indonesian market and to raise awareness about its products among consumers there, CCI recently organised the first Cotton Day Indonesia, a series of seminars and fashion shows, and plans to hold it every year. (DS)
