Apparel exporters to pay only fixed terminal charges, now

Chittagong Joint Forces commander and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) members met, Thursday, and decided that from now on, the apparel manufacturers would not have to pay extra charges to shipping agents and vessel operators.

Previously, the exporters were required to pay main line operators and shipping agents additional Tk2,000 and Tk4,000 for twenty equivalent feet and forty equivalent feet containers.

According to the new policy, BGMEA members will pay a fixed sum of US $43.40 and $65.10 in terminal handling charges for twenty-foot and forty -foot equivalent units of full load containers, respectively.

For twenty-foot equivalent units and forty-foot equivalent units less container loads traders will pay $130 and $195, respectively, in terminal handling charges.

BGMEA President Anwar -ul- Alam Chowdhury Parvez and Chittagong Joint Forces Commander Brigadier General Hasan Nasir were present, here.

Importers will be allowed to take their containers from hook points.

Rate of terminal handling charge at import level will be fixed on May 14 following submission of a report prepared by an expert committee.
