Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has asked the Sindh government to restore water supply to tannery zone in Sector 7-A of Korangi Industrial Area (KIA) in Karachi to save the leather industry, the country's second largest export-oriented industry.

PTA South Zone Chairman Aziz Ahmed has drawn the attention of the Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Qaim Ali Shah towards worsening infrastructure situation in tannery zone in Karachi. He said that the leather industry is facing acute shortage of water, which is essential to the industry that earns valuable foreign exchange for the country.

He stated that Misbah Uddin Farid, Managing Director of Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB), had paid a visit to the PTA office around three months ago and had ensured the PTA members regarding immediate resumption of water supply for tanneries in the area. But, since then neither the water supply has been resumed nor has there been follow-up by any KWSB official.

The PTA SZ Chairman has asked the government to intervene in the matter and ask the KWSB to deal with the matter seriously, as non-availability of water is badly hitting the leather industry. He pointed out that ground water levels too have receded to danger level and several wells in the area are drying up speedily.

He asserted that the Punjab government is giving special preference to Sialkot leather industry and has sanctioned a large plot and funds up to PKR 780 million for developing a model leather zone there. In contrast, the dismal attitude of the Sindh government is adversely affecting the leather industry in Karachi, Pakistan's largest leather zone, he added.
