Intertek helps ensure children's products meet new CPSIA limits

Effective August 14, 2011, children's products marketed and sold in the U.S. must comply with the new, reduced lead (Pb) content limit of 100 parts per million (ppm), as set forth in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA).

Manufacturers, retailers and importers will need to ensure their regulated products are in compliance or they could face monetary fines or removal of their products from the market. Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety solutions serving a wide range of industries, offers comprehensive CPSIA services to help manufacturers, retailers and importers identify compliance requirements and conduct the required testing.

Intertek's CPSIA services include regulatory consulting, product testing conducted through its network of U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) accepted laboratories, and implementation programs for CPSIA compliance. One such program is iComply™, a user-friendly, web-based artificial intelligence application that takes product characteristics, material and process information input by the manufacturer or importer to generate a plan for all testing required to meet the applicable mandatory regulations for that product. All necessary documentation is then stored online for easy reference and access 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“The CPSIA includes many complex provisions for new certification requirements, phthalate and lead limits, mandatory third-party testing requirements, and newly prohibited acts, to name a few,” said Gene Rider, President of Intertek Consumer Goods North America. “It is essential for companies who manufacture and import regulated products in the U.S. to really understand CPSIA requirements and conduct the necessary testing and certification to demonstrate compliance.”

The new 100 ppm limit reflects a reduction from the current 300 ppm limit, which has been in effect since August 14, 2009. It will be enforced for all children's products on the market, defined by the CPSC as those designed and intended primarily for use by children 12 years of age or younger. These include a broad range of products such as books, apparel, footwear, jewelry, toys, and more.
