With an aim to boost leather business in the State of Kano, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) intends to set up Kano Industrial Development Centre for developing a leather cluster at Tiga village.
Director-General of SMEDAN, Alhaji Mohammad Umar Nadada said Kano was also the preferred location for the pilot project of 'One Product, One Local Government' Project, a Rural Enterprise Development Programme to be carried out in association with Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA).
The 'One Product, One Local Government' project, includes the development of the country's leather industry. Pursuant to the project all the local governments would develop a specific product, considering its natural inheritance and also bearing in mind that such a scheme would greatly benefit country's small and medium enterprises and even improve financial condition of the people, Nadada said.
He added that SMEDAN would focus on micro, small and medium level leather enterprises to evaluate how can these enterprises associate with the Kano State government to boost the leather industry.
Nadada further said that the 'One Product, One Local Government' programme has already been launched in countries like Malawi and Rwanda. He clarified that leather enterprises which SMEDAN intends to develop would utilise local technology.
