Tamil Nadu's industrial image is changing rapidly by the initial batch of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) which were approved recently, as global giants of telecom and IT along with renowned local firms of textiles and auto parts vie to purchase land here.

Nokia Industrial Park with 210.87 acres area is the first SEZ being built here, which has 3,500 employees for handset production comprising mainly women. Nokia's Park will employ over 15,000 people by 2009.

Second is the Flextronics SEZ with 250 acres area, built by Flextronics Technologies (India) Pvt Ltd which is putting in Rs430 crores for 5 years to conduct advanced EMS (electronics manufacturing services). EMS will enable it to provide supply chain services to tech firms.

Mahindra World City situated on National Highway 45 is the third active SEZ set up by Mahindra Gesco Developers Ltd. An investment of Rs280 crores is pre-planned for the SEZ, of which Rs236 crores have already been spent.

This SEZ employs 3,862 people and it has achieved Rs337.52 crores from exports in first half of 2006-07. By 2010 it is expected to create 50,000 jobs, take total investment of Rs5,000 crores and achieve exports turnover of Rs8,000 crores a year.

ETL Infrastructures Services Ltd is building the fourth SEZ in 26 acres land area at Pallikaranai village. SEZ will have an annual foreign exchange potential of $800 million through export of softwares and other services.
