Cancellation of SEZs becomes a concerning issue

Radicals in Goa have, for long, been protesting against the Government for sanctioning special economic zones (SEZs) in the state, demanding a complete scrapping of all such projects.

Reluctantly giving in to the demands, the Chief Minister of Goa has finally decided to cancel all notification to all the approved SEZs in the state. In this regard, a plea has also been sent to the Central Government claiming a de-notification of all the approved zones.

The protest has been intensified to such an extent that the Government has had to set up an independent agency named Task Force — Regional Plan 2021 (TF-21), to examine the practicality of SEZs in the state. Already work at three SEZs has been put to a halt.

To compensate, the Government has been making compromise with companies that have made investments to develop SEZs in Goa.

TF-21 appointed by the Government came to the conclusion that SEZs were not the right mode of development for Goa and it does not match the talent skills available in the state.

It further noted that introducing SEZs would only increase the existing burden on infrastructural development and will not contribute to generating employment in the state.
