Shri Kamal Nath, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, has announced that India and Syria have agreed to make concerted efforts to raise the level of bilateral trade to a respectable level commensurate with the potential of the two countries.
This was agreed during the first session of the India-Syria Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) held here during 15-17 January, 2008 where Mr. Abdullah Dardari, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic was also present.
Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in various sectors for mutual benefits. Leaders of both the delegations pressed the need for greater interaction between the business communities of the two countries and it was decided that both the countries would exchange visits of delegation and participate in fairs, exhibitions and buyer-seller meets.
The session was also attended by Dr. Ghias Barakat, Minister of Higher Education; Dr. Ahmed Khaled Al-Ali, Minister of Electricity; and Dr. Tayseer Suleiman Ridawi, Head of State Planning Commission of the Syrian Arab Republic.
Observing that both the countries were maintaining very cordial political and economic relations, Shri Kamal Nath informed that the two countries also shared common views on most of the multilateral issues.
Both the countries also expressed their keenness to cooperate on all matters of mutual interest and of interest to the international community.
