Brazilian leather exports exceeded US $2 billion for the first time in 2007, with China being the largest market and absorbing nearly 33 percent of domestic leather. Following the consumption line, Italy comes next taking 28 percent while US stands third with 11 percent.
The over all leather export marked an increase of 17 percent with sales touching US $1.87 billion.
The year 2008, also began on a positive note, as leather exports grew by 4 percent in January as compared to the previous year. Besides, foreign sales reached $183 million in last month alone.
This year again, China, Italy and US emerged as the major clients. However, sale of wet blue leather dropped to 9,39,000 pieces compared to 2007 while sales revenue for the same declined by 27 percent to reach $47.9 million.
