By the end of 2007-08, the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) is expecting a 10 percent growth in its container traffic which will be a noticeable increase from the 3,49069 TEUs managed in 2006-07.

Besides, the cargo handling volume is also likely to see a growth of 57 million ton by the end of this fiscal year compared to the 55.05 million tons of 2006-07.

Kolkata Port is India's only riverine port with two dock systems - Kolkata Dock System with the oil wharves at Baj Baj and a deep water dock system at Haldia Dock Complex, for sea borne trade.

Authentic sources confirmed that officials at the port are focusing on enhancing the efficiency of the existing lock gate at Haldia by about 60 percent. This implies that a total of 16 vessels can enter and leave the lock gate every day against the present 10 vessels.
