India's total trade with Japan has almost doubled over the last five years. It increased from US$ 3.7 billion in 2002-03 to US$ 7.4 billion in 2006-07.
While exports increased form $ 1.8 billion to $ 2.8 billion, imports from Japan witnessed a higher increase – from $ 1.8 billion to $ 4.5 billion. Consequently, Japan's share in India's global imports is now around 2.3%, while its share in India's global export is 2.6%.
Mr. Abhijit Das, Deputy Project Coordinator and Officer-in-Charge, UNTAD India Programe, explained the basic purpose of the workshop to the participants.
He urged them to identify specific items that need to be proetected and included in the “sensitive list” vis-a-vis imports from Japan, besides the products of India's export interest.
