Warm, Dry Spring Weather Moved East Spurring Consumer Demand. The East Dried Out, But Storms Returned To The West. Rare Tornado In Atlanta.
Weekend Review (15-16 March 2008): After a much-needed pleasant week in the East, storminess returned with a one-two punch. The first system early in the weekend brought inclement weather, but mainly in the form of rain as it moved through the Mid-Atlantic.
The second storm was already moving rapidly eastward across the Mississippi and Tennessee valleys setting its sights further south and putting down heavy rains through much of the Southeast into the Carolinas.
A rare, but very powerful tornado ripped through downtown Atlanta causing significant damage and leaving many without power for a sustained period of time. Much colder temperatures settled in behind the storms with afternoon highs in the 30s, 40s, and 50s from Eastern Canada into the Southeast.
Out West, the unsettled conditions continued through the entire weekend with rains extending well south into Southern California and the Desert Southwest by Sunday. Mountain snows were abundant across the Intermountain West.
Last Week (week-ending 03/15/2008): The week began with a monster storm in Eastern Canada moving away into the Atlantic, but not before producing heavy flooding rains along the East Coast and copious amounts of snow in the Upper Midwest, Interior Northeast, and St. Lawrence Valley. Winds exceeding hurricane strength caused widespread damage and power outages. The remainder of the week was much more tranquil across North America.
