After several weeks of pleasant spring conditions, the West saw a return to cooler temperatures and frequent Pacific storminess during the week. The heavy rains were focused from central California into coastal BC while mountain snows were abundant. Consumers in the East got a taste of Spring weather as much warmer than normal temperatures were prevalent from the Plains to the East Coast.
Amplifying that feeling was the relative lack of storms during the week. The storminess that did occur in Canada and the U.S. Northern Tier were weak, quick moving events. An early weak soaker occurred across the Deep South, followed by the powerful tornado and thunderstorms in Atlanta during the weekend.
Consumer Impact in the East/Mid-Western North America: While the week was cooler to last year, early Spring consumer demand was favorable during the week due to the warm temperatures. Unfortunately, the weekend wetness and colder temperatures curbed that momentum. Emergency purchasing was strong in Atlanta following the weekend severe weather.
Consumer Impact in the Western Portions of North America: The strong early Spring selling of the past few weeks diminished with the return of cooler and stormy conditions and conditions which were cooler than last year.
