The 15th Ecology Expression Award was held on March 18, in Jaraguá do Sul, Santa Catarina. It is one of the main events of Water Week, which gathers companies, NGOs, environmentalists, deans, professors and authorities concerned with the theme.

Thirty companies, entities, city halls and NGOs will be awarded at Malwee Park, an Atlantic Forest Reserve upon to community leisure and which preserves 35 thousand trees, and has 17 lakes, a museum, restaurants and sports courts.

Among the award winners, Wandér Weege, president of Malwee, receives the title of environmental personality precisely for his actions geared towards water preservation.

The change in the company's industrial management made it stop taking 200 million annual liters of water from Jaraguá River and it recently acquired two more Atlantic Forest reserves, one that preserves more than 30 crucial water springs.

In the 15 years of this award, 1208 cases of entities and companies from the south have been registered and it is certified by the Ministry of the Environment as the largest in the country for entities, NGOs, companies and city halls.

"We estimated that the award would have a useful life of about five years. We imagined that after companies had obtained ISO 14000 certification, the projects would become every day occurrences and not be deserving of prominence," says Antonio Odilon Macedo, coordinator of the award and director of the Brazilian Association ofEngineering Consultants.

"But reality proved to be very different, as phenomena like global warming show." Indeed, research by Market Analysis in Brazil shows that the concern that grew the fastest from 2004 to 2007 was regarding environmental issues from 2.4% to 13.2% and is already the third largest among Brazilians, immediately after safety and almost tied with unemployment.
