SSL International plc has announced the proposed closure of its manufacturing facility in Guernsey, which produces part of the company's OTC and Scholl footcare product range. Under this proposal, manufacture of these products would transfer to SSL's facility in Peterlee and to third party suppliers.
Following consultation with employees and their representatives, a gradual run-down is planned, with the Guernsey site anticipated to close at the end of 2008 with the loss of approximately 95 jobs.
From 2002 to 2004 the company sold-off its medical and industrial products to focus on its two main brands and OTC products as a "strategic repositioning". The first major diversement was of OTC brands, Thornton & Ross Limited acquiring twenty-one products in March 2002. Marigold Industrial Gloves was sold to Comasec SAS in November 2003.
SSL is a focused consumer products company with the leading global brands, Durex and Scholl as well as a diverse portfolio of locally owned brands, such as Meltus, Medised and Syndol in the UK and Sauber and Mister Baby in Southern Europe.
