Appellate Body welcomes two new members

Ms Yuejiao Zhang (China) and Mr Shotaro Oshima (Japan) were sworn-in on 20 May 2008 as members of the Appellate Body at a ceremony at the WTO.
Mr Luiz Olavo Baptista (Brazil), Chairman of the Appellate Body, administered the declaration undertaken by Ms Zhang and Mr Oshima. Director-General Pascal Lamy congratulated Ms Zhang and Mr Oshima, adding that their wealth of expertise and experience from various sectors would be invaluable to the Appellate Body.
The Chairman of the Dispute Settlement Body, Ambassador Mario Matus of Chile, welcomed Ms Zhang and Mr Oshima on behalf of all WTO members, noting that with their impressive backgrounds spanning public service, international dispute settlement and academia, they would enhance the Appellate Body's increasingly vital role in enforcing and preserving the rights and obligations of WTO members.
