Clothing & footwear consumer prices higher in May

Harmonised indices of consumer prices:
Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, prices in May 2008 went up by 1.2%. Compared to a month earlier, the annual price growth was slightly higher (6.3%) while the 12-month average price growth has been increasing since July 2007 and reached 5.3% (last year 2.6%).

In May 2008 goods prices increased by 1.6% and service prices by 0.3%. As regards goods, non-durable goods prices grew by 2.2% and semi-durable goods prices by 0.9%, while durable goods prices fell by 0.1%. Compared to May 2007, goods prices were up by 6.7% and service prices by 5.3%.

The highest monthly rise was observed in these groups: clothing and footwear (by 1.2%), recreation and culture (by 1%), miscellaneous goods (by 0.4%), furnishing (by 0.3%) and education (by 0.2%).

Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in April 2008 the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 3.3% (down from 3.6% in March), while in the EU-27 it was 3.6% (down from 3.8% in March). The highest annual inflation rate was recorded in Latvia (17.4%) and the lowest in the Netherlands (1.7%); in Slovenia it stood at 6.2%.
