2007 is a 'provisional' year for footwear sector

In the wake of unsatisfactory results in 2006, there was a significant recovery in exports to the United Kingdom (+8.6% by value and +6.8% by volume).

The overall growth in EU countries (around 5% by value) was countered by decreases on the North American market, which was greatly penalised by currency dynamics related to the dollar, and in Japan.

Nevertheless, last year's favourable trend continued in Russia, which grew 25% by value (confirming it as our fourth most important end market) and 22.2% by volume.

Imports rose sharply to 390 million pairs, reflecting a 7.3% increase. Despite the fact that these figures also include reimports of products that are partially made abroad, they are nevertheless significant.

The competitive pressure exerted by the Far East continues to be strong. In terms of volume, double-digit increases were seen for China (+16%) and Vietnam (+14.7%), despite the specific drop in leather footwear, influenced by Europe's current antidumping measures (-16.5% by volume from China and -9% from Vietnam, for an aggregate figure of -14.3%).

The footwear industry continued to post a significant positive balance in terms of value, which rose compared to 2006.

Domestic production dropped slightly by volume (but with a plus sign in terms of value) and is estimated at 241.9 million pairs (-0.9%) for a total of 7.5 billion euros (+3.8%).

Following a long period of stagnation, domestic consumption rose by 3.5% in terms of volume, although the final months for 2007 were marked by a slowdown in purchases.

Employment figures for 2007 were more negative than in the recent past, due also to the delay in the recording of closings by businesses that have not managed to weather the extended crisis of the previous years.

The number of employees dropped to 88,668 (-5.8% compared to 2006, equivalent to approximately 5,500 lost jobs), whereas the number of companies decreased by 3.1%, dropping to 6,450.
