It will be for the first time that Indian and Italian leather tanners would collaborate through technology transfers, joint ventures and business partnerships to become leading players in the world leather market.
Giving force to this dream is the Indian Finished Leather Manufacturers and Exporters Association (IFLEMA) which has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Assiciazione Conciatori, Santa Croce, Italy. The latter, a tannery cluster comprising over 400 tanneries, and manufacturing units for machinery, chemicals and consumables, will help the leather industry in Tamil Nadu to improve skills and efficiency through training and exploration of potential.
This in turn would help tanners in Tamil Nadu to become more competitive on a global level as promoting cleaner production technologies would attract latest technologies and investment. Moreover, an improvement in the leather industry would also provide opportunities for future joint ventures and business partnership between and Indian and Italian tanners.
This program is reported to be funded by the Italian Government and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
Presently, the state of Tamil Nadu has over 900 tanneries that contribute about 60 percent of the total leather India consumes and accounts for about 50 percent to the country's exports. The MoU with Italian counterpart would immensely help the Indian industry to grab a considerable amount of international market shares.
Besides, a delegation from Italy would also be visiting the country for initiating joint ventures and business partnership as part of the implementation plan.
