On accessibility, Stephen Robertson, BRC Director General, said: “Adequate transport links and car parking provision are crucial to supporting the viability of town centre retailing and the contribution it makes to local communities and economies.
The Commission rightly points out local authorities shouldn't primarily use car parks as a revenue raising tool but fails to acknowledge the role played by retail chains in providing car parking facilities often used by customers visiting smaller local stores.”
On crime, Stephen Robertson, BRC Director General, said: “With violence against staff up fifty per cent year-on-year, there's a crying need for police and politicians to take retail crime seriously.
Retail is a vital contributor to economic growth and to the regeneration of areas blighted by crime and disorder. Without retail, communities will not be sustained or revived.
“Retailers appreciate they have responsibilities in supporting community safety. The Conservative Commission should recognise they are involved with, and fund, many local partnerships.
These include Business Improvement Districts which benefit the whole community and particularly many small retailers with lower rateable values who do not have to contribute at all.”
