Leather & garment sector marks healthy exports

According to statistics textile shipments account for an average of 30 percent of the total exports of Jordan. While the textile export of the country in 2006 was around US $1.2 billion, it registered a fall of over 15 percent in 2007.

However, leather and garment industry of some regions seem to have recovered well and is showing tremendously positive results.

Zarqa Chamber of Industry (ZCI) recently announced that this industry in Zarqa and Mafraq was a notable earner, accounted for 45.7 percent of the total exports in the first ten months of 2008.

Overall industrial export of the region during the period reached over $368 million, representing a sharp growth of 16.5 percent as compared to the same period of 2007.

In October 2008 alone the two regions marked exports worth $37.4 million, recording 19.5 percent year-on-year growth. Last year, exports in this month only touched $31.3 million.
