PMEGP to create more employment opportunities

The Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Shri Mahabir Prasad while addressing the Members of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to his Ministry here on December 18, 2008 said that the Ministry has introduced a new credit linked subsidy programme called Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) by merging the two schemes that were Prime Minister's Rojgar Yojana (PMRY) and Rural Employment Generation Programme (REGP) for generation of employment opportunities.

Under this scheme the Government will provide 15 % subsidy to general category beneficiaries and special category beneficiaries in the urban sector. The Scheme was discussed at length in the meeting.

The Minister said that the scheme will be implemented by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), as the single nodal agency at the national level. The scheme will be implemented through State KVIC Directorates, State Khadi and Village Industries Boards (KVIBs) and District Industries Centres (DICs) and banks.

KVIC is committed to strengthen the Khadi and Village Industry sector in the country and create more employment opportunities. 99.18 lakh job opportunities have been created by it so far.

PMEGP will be a central sector scheme to be administered by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).

The Minister further added that a total outlay of Rs. 4485 crore has been provided for subsidy under PMEGP which is estimated to create 37.38 lakh additional employment opportunities.

The Consultative Committee Meeting was attended by Hon'ble Members Dr. K. S. Manoj, S/Shri Sujan Chakraborty, Bikram Keshari Deo and Moinul Hassan Ahamed.

Shri Dinesh Rai, Secretary, Ministry of MSME, Ms. Kumud Joshi, Chairperson, KVIC and Shri J. S. Mishra, CEO, KVIC also spoke on the occasion.
