This will be followed by a presentation on "Terms of delivery for exports to Europe (including REACH)" by Dr. Gerhard Nickolaus, MD, PFI, Germany. Besides this, Mr. Uwe Thamm, Director of the International Shoe Competence Center Pirmasens (ISC) will deliver speech on "Will the virtual reality catch up the shoe industry?”

FDDI - SATRA Collaboration:
Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI) was a member of the Shoe and Allied Trade Research Association (SATRA), UK, for very long time from 1995 to 2002. Again FDDI is very keen to take a SATRA membership and collaborate with SATRA in various activities to promote footwear industry.

"We have been receiving enumerable requests from the industry to get the SATRA accreditation for FDDI laboratories. The test reports of the accredited laboratories are more acceptable in the international business," said, Mr. Rajeev Lakhara, IRS, Managing Director, FDDI.

Since long time FDDI is making efforts to make collaboration with international institutes. FDDI has been successful in making collaboration with PFI, Germany, Fashion Institute of Technology, America, Nagold, Germany, The Textile Institute, U.K. etc. The collaboration with SATRA has taken shape.

Stating the collaboration of FDDI's ITC with SATRA as a move in the right direction, Mr. Rajeev Lakhara, IRS, Managing Director, FDDI, said, "We have been receiving enumerable requests from the industry to get the SATRA accreditation for FDDI laboratories. The test reports of the accredited laboratories are more acceptable in the international business."

SATRA was formed in 1919 to serve the footwear industry but has since expanded to serve other consumer industry sectors including furniture, safety products, clothing, floorcoverings, leathergoods and fabric care.

SATRA is the world's leading research and technology centre of its kind and employs more than 180 scientific, technical and support staff across two sites in the UK and a China office.

The collaboration is on the anvil which includes:-
•Accreditation of laboratory services to be provided by International Testing Centre (ITC), Chennai.
•Starting of SATRA accredited shoe technician course and leather grading course (short term intensive training course)
•FDDI and SATRA are also exploring the possibility of collaboration in research and development.

The ITC of FDDI specializes in testing of leather, leather products, footwear, footwear components, textile products, plastics, etc. The International Testing Centre is the only laboratory in India which has been ISO 17025 certified by Deutschen Akkreditierungs Rat (DAR) of Germany for testing of banned chemicals and safety footwear tests as per EN 344-1: 1993 norms. It has also been awarded the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 by Bureau Veritas Quality International.
