The Chinese Commerce Minister, Mr Chen Deming sounded an implicit warning to high-end footwear manufacturers in Europe last Friday. At that time, he was trying to convince the EU to cancel controversial anti-dumping duties on Chinese products.

Chen Deming's speech added some tension to the two-day trade meeting between the EU and China, when both sides made efforts to describe the meeting held in Brussels as a success.

Chen Deming says that China faces the pressure to protect national industries and keep them away from shocks. The EU should positively respond to the common goal of free and fair trade, immediately announce the end of anti-dumping measures against footwear.

Footwear has become one of the most controversial trade issues between China and the European Union. China says that tariff measures reduced China's footwear exports to the EU by 15 percent, from €2.080 billion in 2005 to €1.78 billion in 2007.

Despite the remark of the Minister of Commerce, both sides, continued to praise last week's meeting as a signal to improve bilateral economic and trade relations and eliminate protectionism.
