The Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has sought easy access for local manufacturers in US markets. Pakistan's businessmen need to have US market access for all sectors, especially for leather, leather garments and leather footwear.

This demand was raised by the members of the PTA in a meeting held with the US Consulate's Principal Officer in Lahore, Mr Bryan D Hunt, since US customers are reluctant to visit Pakistan and a negative travel advisory from the US.

According to the figures revealed by the Chairman of PTA Mr Agha Saiddain, the highest per capita shoe consumption was in the US, which stood at eight shoes per annum and in Europe it amounted to four pairs per annum.

China stands as the main beneficiary of the US market as Pakistan's share of exports of shoes, garments, upholstery and leather is very low as compared to that of China, India, Italy and Turkey, informed Mr. Agha Saiddain.

As a free trade agreement for textiles, would cause unemployment in the US, it is not advisable during the current economic conditions, Mr Hunt said, and suggested that the entrepreneurs do business with more creative ideas to enjoy maximum trade with the US.
