President of India, Mrs. Patibha Patil's address to the joint session of parliament has “unveiled a growth centric action agenda for the new UPA government”, according to FICCI. She has referred to major reform issues from disinvestment, passing pending reform bills (The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority Bill, 2005) to reforms in education and health.

“These reforms and institutional proposals can usher India in to the next phase of growth”, said Mr. Harsh Pati Singhania, President, FICCI. The agenda focuses on infrastructure development and addresses the issue of energy security.

FICCI welcomes the President's emphasis on the need to focus on sectors that have been adversely hit by the global financial meltdown. The sectors prioritized by the government which needs immediate attention includes SMEs, exports, textiles, commercial vehicles, infrastructure and housing. Prioritization of these sectors is in line with FICCI's 100 Day Action Agenda for the New Government.

FICCI is happy on the decision of the government to have public accountability for NREGA. Decision to present five annual reports by the government to the people on education, health, employment, environment and infrastructure will bring about more transparency in the system ensuring better governance, which is one of the key areas pointed out by FICCI in its 100 Day Action Agenda.
