Delay in rehabilitation of leather sector disappoints PTA

The Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) expressed its disappointment with the Federal Ministry of Commerce for not taking initiative to communicative with the stakeholders pertaining to the rehabilitation of leather sector though first two quarters of the ongoing fiscal 2009-10 have already passed.

During last fiscal year 2008-09, the leather sector witnessed an overall decline of 22.24 percent in exports; hence, the stakeholders of this sector would like to discuss the road map for its rehabilitation with the Commerce Secretary Mr. Zafar Mahmood and apprise him regarding the exports of leather, leather garments, footwear, gloves and leather goods, which are experiencing continuous plunge since past 18 months.

During July-November 2009, leather exports in terms of value slipped down to $111.12 million from $146.09 million, recorded in the same period of 2008. Whereas, the exports of leather apparel, leather gloves and leather footwear declined by 15.88 percent, 59.03 percent and 40.50 percent respectively to $165.146 million, $31.167 million and $3.276 million, during the same period.
