By February 28, the tannery industries in Hazaribagh will be relocated to an external area of the capital, Dhaka, as per the decision taken by the government. It has also asked the industries, which discharge liquid wastes into water bodies, to install effluent treatment plant (ETP), and has set a deadline of June 30 for this installation.
As four highly-polluted rivers surrounding the capital were declared ecologically critical, certain remedial and preventive measures are being taken to save them, informed the State Minister for Forest and Environment Mr. Hasan Mahmud.
In last June, the High Court ordered to move the tanneries before February 28, 2010, and asked the concerned authorities to shut down those tanneries which fail to meet the directive terms.
Water of the Buriganga River, the main river flowing besides the capital, is getting contaminated due to the tannery industry at Hazaribagh which also causes severe environmental pollution posing serious health hazards.
In this regard, cases are being filed against the industries operating without ETP, informed the State Minister. Legal actions have been taken against 1,423 industries during the last six months, by the Department of Environment, for polluting the environment of the country, he added.
