A panel of experts has been formed for stipulating the environmental compliance norms for leather and textile sectors, said Mr. Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister for Textile, while inaugurating the India International Leather Fair organized by the Indian Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO).

In a bid to protect environment, the pollution control measures are necessary for the industries such as leather and textile, said the Minister.

An expert panel to offer environmental guidelines has been constituted following the discussions between Mr. Maran and Union Environment Minister Mr. Jairam Ramesh. The report offered by the experts of Central Leather Research Institute and industry sectors would confirm that there is no overdoing or underplaying of environmental issues, said Mr. Maran.

The Minister told leather industry to export finished products instead of raw leather as to maintain the competitive stand in the international market it is crucial to move up the value chain.

He further said that it was expected that in coming years the leather sector will create additional one million jobs, as it has the advantage of extensive availability of raw material in India that has the world's largest livestock population.
