An industrial estate for the leather industry on 150 acres of land would co-operatively be set up near Raiwand, Lahore by the Punjab Industrial Estate (PIE) and Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA), announced Mr. S M Tanveer, Chairman PIE after a meeting with PTA representatives.
Along the lines of Punjab government's policy, PIE is setting up several new industrial estates across the region under a comprehensive plan, which will be unveiled shortly. On account of consistent efforts and proper roadmap, leather industry of the country can witness growth in export orders, said Mr. Tanveer.
In next five years, Pakistan can obtain export orders of $5 billion, against current $943 million worth of exports of leather products. Leather industry which has attracted an investment of $1.22 billion is the second largest industrial sector following textile industry that requires proper gas and power supply, said PTA representatives.
In country's overall exports, leather garments' share is around 7 percent and it contributes 5 percent to gross domestic product. The industry employs around 200,000 people producing finished leather of high-quality for both, domestic and global consumption.
