The leather and footwear industry of Tunisia showed a positive trend during the initial four months of the year 2010, recording 166 percent growth in import and/or export cover rate and 13 percent rise in exports.
As a result of sector activities, during the year 2009-10, exports of leather and footwear industry increased by 12.8 percent, however, the shoe industry registered a plunge of 4.8 percent. Around 88 percent of the overall leather-footwear exports are shared by products such as shoes, shoe uppers and handbags worth 197.8 million dinars.
Country's leather industry worth 8.9 million dinars takes up fourth position in exports. The leather industry showed a positive import and/or export cover rate with the exports of products worth 225.3 million dinars and imports of products worth 135.6 million dinars.
About 91 percent of the total exports of the Tunisian leather sector are shipped to countries such as France, Germany and Italy.
