Annu Tandon, Congress MP from Unnao, stated that any attempt from the side of the state government to reposition the tanneries in Kanpur to Banthar Leather Park in Unnao, would be strongly resisted by her.
She said that, the state government intends to relocate the leather industries from Jajmau and Kanpur to Unnao and has presently also summoned a meeting at Lucknow.
Tandon further asserted that, she was not in opposition of the dry leather industries but rather against the tanneries, which were contaminating the ground water, and held her stand by saying that, she could also sacrifice her life to protect Unnao.
The MP, while citing a report recently released by the Indian Institute of Toxicology Research stated that, the intensity of fluoride as also the comprehensive limits for dissolved solids in 13 of the 18 samples collected by a group of scientists, were in excess of the recommended standards. Also, in six of the samples, sulphate concentration was found on the higher side.
According to Tandon, the presence of mercury observed in one of the water samples that, was tested by the above mentioned group of scientists, was an eye-opener.
