UP govt bans setting up of new tanneries in Kanpur

Secretary of a leading industry's association recently announced that, the Uttar Pradesh government had taken a stern step towards disallowing any new leather tanneries from developing in Jajmau suburb. A warning has also been issued to the existing 418 tanneries against release of harmful effluents in to the river Ganga.
Added Imran Siddique, Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Leather Industries Association (UPLA) that, the decision of disallowing estalibshment of new leather tannery in Jajmau was passed during a joint meet between the government, state environment department, UPLA and pollution control board officials.
However, this decision is likely to adversely affect, about 50,000 workers and the leather and leather products industry worth Rs 2,500 crore.
Also, noting the increasing amount of pollution that was generated from 65 'most polluting' tanneries, district authorities in April, had ordered owners of these units to immediately shift base in Unnao, outside Kanpur.
