The Roha site of Clariant Chemicals (India) Ltd won the 'Vasundhara Award - 2009 initiated by MPCB (Maharashtra Pollution Control Board) and Environment Department, Govt. of Maharashtra, in the “large scale industries” category, to recognize exemplary work carried out by Industries in Maharashtra. This award recognizes the various sectors for their sustainable development while balancing business, service functions and societal objectives. The award aims at setting role models to inspire others to emulate them.

The award ceremony was fittingly held to coincide with World Environment Day on June 5, 2010. A trophy and cash award was handed over to Clariant and was received by Dr. Satya Kumar, Site Head - Roha, Dr. S. Nakate, Head-Site ESHA and Mr. Vaibhav Naik, WWTP, Roha at the hands of Mr. Sachin Ahir - State Environment Minister (Govt. of Maharashtra).

The media covered the event which had its 'red carpet' moments at the prize distribution ceremony held in Mumbai. The chief guest was Hon'ble Chief Minister, Mr. Ashok Chavan, Mr. Suresh Shetty, Environment Minister, Govt of Maharashtra, and Mr. Sachin Ahir, Minister of State for Environment, among other senior dignitaries who graced the occasion. Also present, were other MPCB officials and senior members.

“Setting a favorable carbon footprint is not a mammoth task if taken seriously at every level of production and after.” says Dr. Satya Kumar, Site Head for Clariant, Roha, who states that Clariant's systems not only conform to global norms but also ensure eco-friendly practices that go into its entire range of products, a natural by-product of the core values inherent in Clariant.

Mr. Peter Palm, VC & MD opines: “Pushing the bar to better the safe environment practices will always be integral to our vision and competence. Clariant India has received numerous accolades and awards for their practices. Our quality and safe practices are manifest in each product; be it in leather, paper, textile, cosmetics, etc.”

The Vasundhara Award is part of the MPCB's efforts to ensure that the industries which are 'ecofriendly' and follow 'green' measures are rewarded. The Vasundhara award has a strict process where nominations are screened for completeness and correctness. Site visits to the Company are then made to verify that practices are as per norms and claims, beyond mere business and societal compulsions. After a thorough evaluation, the final shortlist is arrived at. Finally, the awardees are declared. The awards are held on a grand scale with participation by state ministers and senior officials.
