Leather and footwear exports for the first half of the current year, as compared to the corresponding period last year, have gone up by 10.9 percent, to touch US $2.3 billion.
According to the Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association, during the period under consideration, US emerged as the leading importer, with a 28.9 percent share in total exports.
A decline was noted in the exports to EU, as European Commission levied anti-dumping duties for importing leather-capped shoes, manufactured in Vietnam.
At present, a majority of the footwear manufacturers have orders to suffice till last part of the year. Also, when compared to last year, this year the quantum of orders has gone up by almost 15-20 percent.
Vietnam mainly exports sports shoes, cloth and leather shoes, and sandals to over 50 countries and terrains. Several companies counting Biti's, Vina Giay, and T&T have effectively developed their own brands.
Exporters have since been concentrating on growing their share in the domestic market, chasing a target of 50 percent share, but the footwear sector during the first part of the year experienced a dearth of labour to the extent of 10 percent.
The association has advised the shoe manufacturers to take appropriate steps to keep hold of the labourers, and to also train the new workers, whom they appoint.
