The key environmental issues that the tanneries in the Sialkot area are facing, provide a good opportunity to these tanneries to revamp and relocate to Sialkot Tannery Zone (STZ), according to Ivan Král of Agri-Business Development Branch of UNIDO.

The STZ is a purposely developed tanning zone which would house facilities like common effluent treatment plants, Král said while acquainting all the stakeholders of the tanning industry regarding the issues that are coming in the way of developing the STZ into a world-class tannery zone.

Relocation of the local tanning units would facilitate their modernization, especially in terms of environmental control. The development of the STZ should not be limited to just moving the tanning industry from Sialkot, as it is a lifetime opportunity for Pakistan to firmly put its entire export-oriented leather industry on the world map.

Besides UNIDO and Punjab government, several other agencies are joining hands in implementing the project to help relocate the domestic tanning industry and accordingly plan for the new STZ.

UNIDO would help with finalizing the master plan for the new STZ, and would assist in preparing draft tannery designs and a conceptual plant layout for each design. This would cover areas like manufacturing, storage and administration. Also, it would work on finalizing operational sequence, labour and energy needs, list of equipments and investment required for the same and also an analysis of overall estimated production costs.

The proposed zone would have a cleaner production mechanism, some of which would even include pre-treatment facilities for effluents. Moreover, latest information is also being made available regarding the technology/equipment suppliers, inclusive of training and demonstration of suggested cleaner technologies like water management, hair save processing, solar water heating, chrome management, and occupational safety and health.

In the last few years, many similar projects and leather zones have been established in several countries, which include India's Kolkata leather complex, Turkey's Bursa leather complex, Iran's Tabriz leather complex, etc.
