Indian e-commerce company Flipkart recently announced the launch of its data centre in Hyderabad as part of strengthening technology infrastructure. This is its second data centre in the country and has been built in partnership with CtrlS, a city-based company that provides services for remote storage, processing and distribution of large volume of data.

The data centre will help strengthen the company’s growing marketplace e-commerce business in India, enhance its ability to bring in more sellers and micro, small and medium enterprises to the platform and cater to more consumers in the country, according to a Walmart press release.

This facility has been designed to be Tier-4 rated, most of the power consumed is fulfilled by renewable energy, and is energy efficient, the release said. A Tier 4 data centre is fault-tolerant, allowing for the occurrence of any unplanned activity while still maintaining operations. Tier 4 facilities have no single points of failure.

Telangana principal secretary for information technology and commerce Jayesh Ranjan, who inaugurated the facility, said the state is the first to come out with a dedicated policy on data centres, and to see such encouraging results come out is very satisfying for all. (DS)
