DPIIT analysing suggestions on draft e-com policy

The comments and suggestions received from stakeholders on India’s draft national e-commerce policy are now being analysed by the department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT). The deadline for receiving the suggestions, which ended on March 29, will reportedly not be extended further. The earlier deadline of March 9 had been extended.
The process of formulation of the final policy may wait till a new government takes over as it requires cabinet approval, according to a news agency report.
DPIIT had held consultations with stakeholders on the policy earlier this month, where a demand was raised for a separate policy on data-related issues.
The draft policy laid out conditions regarding collection or processing of sensitive data locally and storing it abroad. It also suggested fixing a three-year period for the industry to adjust to the data storage requirement of the country to develop infrastructure for promoting digital economy.
These proposals had not gone well with certain foreign technology firms as they do not want to store data in India, according to the report. (DS)
