GIAN-like programme on the anvil for NIFT: Irani

GIAN is a programme for higher education formulated by the Indian ministry of human resource development. Speaking at the NIFT convocation ceremony, Irani said that this institute has been a small revolution that began thirty years ago and congratulated the graduating students. The minister encouraged the students to reflect on what they can leverage from the textile industry.

Citing some recent research papers of the faculty members of NIFT, the minister told the students that only they can decide if they would like to contribute to sub-sectors such as technical textiles, which are of strategic significance to national development. Irani said that as a nation that prides in self-sufficiency, textile machinery is another area that needs strengthening and support.

Chetan Chauhan, chairperson of the board of governors at NIFT, urged the graduating students to take their learning to the real world and create a globally relevant fashion environment in India.

NIFT offered four doctoral degrees, 92 postgraduate degrees and 229 undergraduate degrees at this year's convocation ceremony. Distinguished members from board of governors and faculty members of NIFT, and Sunil Sethi, president, Fashion Design Council of India also attended the ceremony. (KD)
